The Word of Life in 1 John 1

In the book of 1 John, we are presented with powerful words that express the grace of God, Jesus Christ, our Savior and our Righteousness. It's a message for believers and non-believers alike. Let's take a closer look at what this verse has to tell us about the Word of Life.

The meaning of 1 John 1
The first verse of 1 John begins with "That which was from the beginning..." This phrase indicates that Jesus Christ has been with us from eternity - before creation, before time itself. He is "the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End" (Revelation 22:13). This phrase also reminds us that Jesus was present at creation (John 1:3) and is the source of life itself (John 14:6).

The next part, "which we have heard", refers to all Christians who have heard or read the Scriptures. We have heard his voice by reading his Word. He speaks to us through his Word, which enlightens our hearts and minds (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Moreover, hearing God's Word leads to faith in Him (Romans 10:17).

The third part, "what we have seen with our own eyes", refers to Jesus' stay on earth. refers to Jesus' time on earth. His disciples saw him in person as they wandered around Galilee, preaching in the temple courts, healing the sick and suffering (Matthew 4:23-24; 9:35-36). They witnessed his ministry and miracles at first hand. Seeing him walk among them was proof enough that he was indeed the Lord of all things.

The last part: "whom we beheld and our hands touched concerning the word of life", also refers to Jesus' sojourn on earth, since he was a living being whom they touched with their hands and spoke to face to face. His words brought life to their hearts when they encountered him directly during his earthly ministry (John 6:63; 20:29; Luke 24:39).

1 John 1 is a powerful reminder that a relationship with God begins with listening to his Word, seeing him in action, looking into his eyes, and touching him through prayerful conversation. Just as Jesus' disciples did centuries ago when he walked this earth, you too can experience his presence today if you open your heart to him through faith in his Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and our Justifier!

May this verse be an encouragement to all believers as well as an invitation to non-believers who seek truth in the darkness! Amen!
