What does love look like?

If you asked ten random people to define love, you'd probably get ten different answers. We often define what we love by what we value or appreciate most. But with so many different and conflicting tastes, followers of Jesus must seek the truth about love.

Our culture, our own values, or what we feel in our hearts, do not truly define love. The true definition of love comes from God, because "God is love" 1 John 4:8. 1 Corinthians 13 is devoted entirely to the definition of love.

1 Corinthians 13:5 says that love takes no account of evil. Evil is anything that opposes God and his ways. Evil is when we disobey God's Law, make the wrong choice or cause harm to someone.

In fact, evil manifests itself when we neglect to love God and our neighbor.
For example, if someone has a difficult character and doesn't know the love of Jesus, let's not rejoice. Love should guide us to pray for them and share with them the truth about Jesus. Or if we see someone suffering who has hurt us, we shouldn't rejoice in their pain. Rather, we should forgive them as God has forgiven us. Love rejoices when God's truth is spread, lived and shared.

Take some time today to examine the differences between your own definition of love and God's. What misunderstandings do you have? What actions or thoughts can you change to love more? Most importantly, with whom can you share the truth about God's love? Make a list of two or three people for whom you can pray and talk about God and his love.
