This morning's meditation: read Psalm 51
Psalm 51 was produced after David committed sin with Bath-sheba and killed Uriah. Despite this state of sin, David did not flee from God. This passage shows us the process of repentance.
David is aware of the gravity and damage of sin in a person's life. That's why he chooses the path of repentance.
- Sin grieves the Holy Spirit, and in the Old Testament the Holy Spirit could be withdrawn. David saw how God's Spirit was withdrawn from Saul by his predecessor and he had perfectly measured the consequences and the tragic end of this king. Paul tells us in Ephesians. 4:30 "Do not grieve the Holy Spirit for whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."
- David asks God to return to the joy of salvation. Yes, indeed, sin robs us of joy. It brings despondency into our lives. The absence of joy results from the presence of sin. As soon as communion is re-established with God, this joy returns once again.
- You have to ask God for a willing spirit, as David did, so as not to return to his vomit. Repentance is not the desire to do better tomorrow, it's a deep regret for what we've done and a burning desire to abandon it.
Beloved, David here shows us the true path of repentance. Let us be quick to confess our sins, so that we may always be in good communion with God.
