In the Beginning!
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was chaos and emptiness. There was darkness on the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God hovered over the water (Genesis 1:1-2).
In the beginning, God created heaven and earth. At that moment in history, there was nothing but darkness on the face of the earth, which contrasted wonderfully with the life that was soon to become present in all four directions - under the water too! The Spirit of his presence hovered over those waters (Gen 1:2). This passage speaks volumes about what happens when we turn away from our chaotic state; it reminds us that if you want something to change in you, the ideal is to seek the face of God, our Creator. For only He can work wonders.
God's Spirit is the source of all creation, and it is by His power that the world was formed. God's Spirit is also the source of all life, and it is by His power that we can live, move and have our being (Acts 17:28). God's Spirit is the one who gives us our hope, joy and peace (Romans 15:13). When we are filled with God's Spirit, we are filled with all his goodness.
This verse is often seen as a creation story, but it's much more than that. It's a story of beginnings. In fact, it's all about beginnings - from creating order out of chaos to giving us life and breath.
Slowly but surely, with divine intervention, order began to take shape out of nothing.
