God's power within us
Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 12:10 are a paradox. We don't often see life's trials and hardships as a sign of strength or joy. Our culture only celebrates the physically, financially and mentally strong. It's easy to elevate those who are successful and talented.
However, Paul says that God acts differently with those who follow him. Instead of seeking out the most talented and strongest, God likes to use those who are weak, humble and neglected.
Our natural success and talents can sometimes blind us to the fact that we can no longer see our own strengths and weaknesses.
imperfections and shortcomings... Unfortunately, this can prevent God from working in our lives. But when we are weak and powerless, we become malleable and more willing to rely on God.
That's why Paul says he delights in hardship, persecution and trial. Indeed, it is in these moments that God can be our strength and joy. God shapes our character in difficult times.
Paul was not a naturally gifted speaker or writer, yet God powerfully worked through his weakness to produce extraordinary speeches and letters that today form part of Scripture. God's strength worked through Paul's weakness to accomplish things that Paul could not do on his own.
This perspective changes the way we live. It's in times of anguish, weakness or difficulty that God wants to be our strength. It is in times of persecution and trial that God does some of His most profound work in our lives. If we are in relationship with Him and depend on His strength, He will be with us in times of weakness. He promises to be our strength in the midst of difficulties.
