The Water and Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ

"But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately there came out blood and water." (John 19:34)

Water and blood came out of the side of Jesus Christ. Symbolic elements.

The blood here represents the salvation offered, the cleansing from sin, that is, the work of the cross, for which Jesus Christ was anointed. The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23), but the remedy for sin is the blood of Jesus Christ shed on the cross.

In the Bible, water symbolizes either the Word of God or the Holy Spirit. The water that gushes out, or flows as it does in this text, from the side of Jesus Christ, symbolizes the Holy Spirit who had been promised and whom he releases. It is he who frees himself. "When the Comforter comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who comes from the Father, he will testify about me..." (John 15:26)

The Holy Spirit released on that day is at work in the world today with Christians, and is for us a pledge of eternal life. "Now hope does not deceive, because the love of God is poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us." (Romans 5:5)
What are we to understand here, when we are attacked by the adversary's spear, God expects us to produce life, water and blood represent life.
Amen!
