Love those who hurt us and move forward with peace

Life can sometimes confront us with difficult situations, where people hurt us through words or actions. Being insulted or denigrated publicly can leave painful wounds and scars. So, how should we react in these moments?

How can we love those who offend us and move forward with a positive attitude? Fortunately, the Bible sheds light on this subject and shows us the way forward.

1. Loving in spite of pain: a call from Jesus Christ

In Matthew 5:44, Jesus Christ gives us a radical command: "But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." This may seem impossible to do, especially when we are deeply wounded. Yet Jesus Christ not only asks us to forgive, but also to love those who hurt us. This love is not based on our feelings, but on a conscious choice, motivated by the example of Jesus Christ.
Why does Jesus Christ ask this of us? Because true love comes from God. By choosing to love those who hurt us, we imitate our heavenly Father, who makes the sun rise on both the good and the wicked (Matthew 5:45). It's a way of breaking the cycle of hatred and responding to evil with good.

2. Forgive to free yourself

Forgiveness is an essential step in moving forward positively in life. The Bible teaches us in Ephesians 4:32: "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you." Forgiveness doesn't mean instantly forgetting or minimizing what was done, but rather choosing not to let that pain control our lives.
By forgiving, we not only free the other person, we free ourselves. Forgiveness is a gift we offer both to ourselves and to the person who has hurt us. It allows us to lay our burdens at Jesus' feet and find inner peace.

3. Placing justice in God's hands

When we're hurt, it's natural to want justice. But the Bible reminds us in Romains 12:19: "Do not take vengeance on yourselves, beloved, but let wrath have its way; for it is written, 'Vengeance is mine, I will repay,' says the Lord." God sees all and acts justly. Let us hand over our sorrows to him, and trust him to take care of what seems unjust to us.
This attitude frees us from the desire for revenge and allows us to focus on what's constructive: our relationship with God, our inner peace and our life goals.

4. Move positively through life

To move forward, it's important to fix our eyes on Jesus Christ, not on our wounds. Philippians 3:13-14 encourages us to forget what's behind us and reach for what's ahead: "One thing I do, forgetting what's behind and reaching for what's ahead, I run toward the goal, to win the prize of God's heavenly calling in Christ Jesus."
This doesn't mean we'll never feel pain again, but that we choose not to let it define us or keep us from moving forward. In Christ, we find the strength to move forward, even in difficult times.

5. Practice prayer and humility

When we find it hard to forgive or love, prayer is a powerful weapon. In Matthew 6:12, Jesus teaches us to pray: "Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us." This prayer reminds us that we too have been forgiven by God, despite our faults, and that we are called to offer this forgiveness to others.
Pray for those who hurt you. It may seem difficult, but prayer transforms our hearts. It fills our souls with God's peace and changes our perspective. Little by little, we find the strength to love and forgive.

6. Receive God's peace and joy

Finally, by choosing to love and forgive, we open our hearts to the peace that God promises us. Philippians 4:7 declares, "And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." This peace enables us to walk serenely, despite the storms around us.
In Christ, we find a joy that transcends our circumstances: the joy of knowing that we are loved, forgiven and carried by God. This joy becomes our strength, as Nehemiah 8:10: "The joy of the Lord will be your strength."

Love, forgive and move on

Loving someone who insults or denigrates us is no easy task. But with God's help, it's possible. By following Jesus' example, we choose to love in spite of our wounds, to forgive in order to regain our freedom, and to entrust justice to God.
As we move forward with this attitude, we find peace, joy and new strength to continue our journey. So let's fix our eyes on Jesus and trust him to guide us through each of life's challenges. May his love and grace fill our hearts and help us to shine as lights in this world!
