Let's base our marriage on God's love
Marriage is a lifelong commitment that must be taken seriously. For Christians, it's important to base your marriage on God's love in order to enjoy a fulfilling and lasting relationship. The Bible is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for Christian couples seeking to build their union on solid foundations. But what does the Bible say about basing a marriage on God's love?
1. God's love: the foundation of every successful marriage
In 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, we discover a list of essential qualities for a healthy and fulfilling love relationship. These qualities include patience, kindness, humility, respect and so on. These principles apply not only to the relationship between spouses, but also to all other relationships. Indeed, in the Christian life, we are called to love our neighbor as ourselves.
It's important to remember that God is love, and that we are called to imitate his love. If we build our marriage on this God-given love, then we have a solid foundation for our relationship.
2. The role of love in Christian marriage
The Song of Songs, often seen as an allegory of God's love for his people, gives us an example of the passion and affection that should exist between spouses. They desire each other, rejoice in each other's presence, and encourage each other in their spiritual lives.
When we love our spouse, we embody God's love in action. In Ephesians 5:25-33, Paul exhorts husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the Church. This way of loving implies deep commitment, self-sacrifice, and a priority given to the needs of the other. Christian marriage is based on love, not fleeting feelings.

3. The role of prayer in marriage
The prayer life is indispensable for a fulfilling Christian marriage. It is in prayer that we communicate with God and receive the strength we need to get through the trials and difficulties of married life. In Mark 11:24, we are encouraged to pray with faith for the things we desire.
Prayer can be practiced as a couple, as well as individually. It's important to find time to pray and read the Bible together, so that God can take pride of place in our married life.
4. Honoring God in married life
Christian marriage involves a commitment to God as well as to one's spouse. In Colossians 3:17, we read that whatever we do in life, we must do in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. This includes our actions and attitudes towards our spouse.
Honoring God in our conjugal relationships implies a pure and fulfilling sex life, respectful of the other, and not detrimental to other relationships. We are also called to care for one another, to be compassionate and merciful, to practice humility, and to show our love for one another.
Basing your marriage on God's love is the key to a healthy, fulfilling and lasting relationship. Based on biblical principles, Christian couples can learn to love each other by embodying God's love in action. Prayer, the practice of pure living and a respectful attitude towards each other are key to accomplishing this. As Paul says in Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through him who strengthens me". With God as the foundation of our marriage, we can overcome all trials and live a fulfilling married relationship in God's grace.
Shalom!
