How to resist and defeat the enemy?
"Take salvation for your helmet and the sword of the Spirit, that is, the Word of God.". (Ephesians 6:17)
In this verse, we're talking about the sword of the Holy Spirit, referred to here as the Word of God. When we speak of the sword, we're mostly referring to combat or war. In those days, the soldier wore armor for protection and held a sword in his hand to attack and cut down his enemy.
The Christian is like a soldier for Christ, holding in his heart the sword of the Word of God to resist the wiles of the devil. The war itself has become above all spiritual.
The sword is what the Christian carries, with the ability to wound and defeat the enemy. "The word of God is living and effective," (Heb. 4:12). It is very effective. You can't have a soldier with all the armor without the sword. God's Word is effective in resisting the enemy's cunning. Its study is necessary. During the 40-day temptation in the desert, it was through the Word that Jesus Christ resisted Lucifer Satan and overcame him (Luke 4:1-13). Jesus had the knowledge of the Word, and the Holy Spirit was with Him.
So, to resist we need these three things: to be filled with the Holy Spirit, knowledge of God's Word and God's True Love. If the Lord says that his people perish because they lack knowledge (Hosea 4:6), then knowledge of the Holy Scriptures is a necessity in spiritual warfare.
