How can we be ourselves? What does the Bible tell us?
As Christians, we often wonder how to be ourselves in a world that constantly pushes us to be someone else. We're bombarded with perfect images on social networks that make us feel like we're not good enough. This can lead to anxiety, depression and loss of self-confidence. However, the Bible gives us advice on how to be ourselves and find our worth in God rather than what the world tells us to do.
The Bible's first piece of advice is to accept who we are as God's creations.
When we realize that God made us in His image (Genesis 1:26-27), we can begin to appreciate our own value as human beings. Some of the traits that characterize us, such as our unique personality and talents, have been deposited in us by God. By accepting this, we can stop trying to be like someone else and start focusing on our individual gifts.
The second piece of advice is to seek our identity in Christ.
We are not just ordinary human beings; we have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus (1 Corinthians 6:20). By accepting Jesus as our personal Savior, we have been chosen to belong to God (John 15:16). This means that our identity does not depend on what we do or what we have, but on our relationship with God. We are loved and cherished by God, regardless of our performance.
The third tip is to focus on others rather than yourself.
When we're obsessed with ourselves, we can become selfish, jealous and envious. The Bible teaches us to respect others and value their interests above our own (Philippians 2:3-4). By serving others, loving others and seeking their well-being, we often discover a deeper sense of identity and purpose.
The fourth and final piece of advice is to pray and read God's Word regularly to remind ourselves of who we are in Christ.
Prayer is the way to communicate with God. Reading the Bible is the way to know God. We need both to have a deep relationship with God and to learn more about our own identity in Christ.
As Christians, we need to be aware that our identity should not be based on what we do or what others think of us. We must seek our identity in Christ and learn to accept ourselves as we are.
When we embrace who we are, we can answer the call God has placed on our lives and discover our ultimate purpose.
Always remember that God created you for a reason, and you are loved and valued by Him.
Shalom!
