Be Aware!
Be founded on the rock of life: the word of God.
Every day, we're bombarded with messages telling us what we should believe and how we should live. It can be hard to sort through all the noise and determine what's really important. However, there is one foundation that will never fail: the word of God.
The Bible is a rock-solid foundation on which to build our lives. It supports, guides and orients us when we feel lost. And it gives us hope when we're struggling. What's more, the Bible teaches us about God's character and how he wants to relate to us.
When we anchor our lives in God's Word, we can be sure we're building on a solid foundation.
As long as you are filled with your own righteousness, you remain under the power of sin.
You are feeding a serpent in your womb, which will blow away your piety, and deal a mortal blow to your soul.
Examine every day, with severe exactitude, what is the basis of your hope. Was it laid by the hand of Jesus Christ himself?
Otherwise, your edifice will never withstand the storm that will burst upon it. The enemy will undermine it and topple it from top to bottom.
Examine yourself
The foundation of your hope is an important thing to examine regularly. For only Jesus can give you true righteousness. Any righteousness you think you have on your own is only self-righteousness, and it won't save you from the punishment you deserve.
That's why you need to make sure your hope is founded on the rock of life: the word of God. God's word is alive and powerful, and it's the only thing that can resist the serpent's breath of death. When your hope is in God's word, you can be sure that you won't be overcome by sin or death.
You profess to be a Christian, you attend divine worship, you take part in the holy sacraments - all this is good. But do you realize that in doing all this you could be the most miserable of all men?
Can you remember the moment when Jesus drew near to your heart to remain so well, present to your eyes, that you preferred this single object to all the perfections, beauties and virtues in the world?
Is all that you presume to have done good reputed on your part as garbage before the majesty of the Lord? Is it all lowered before the magnificent glory of his grace and love (Isa. II, 17.19)?
"He will bow down the pride of mankind and humble proud men. For in that day the Lord alone will be honored. And all idols will disappear together. People will take refuge in the caves of the rocks and in the dens of the earth because of the terrors that the LORD provokes, because of the brilliance of his majesty when he rises to terrify the earth."
