Vocation, mission

(Genesis 12: 1 - 3)

One day, God called Abram and said to him: "Leave your country and go to the one I will show you. Abram believed, obeyed the Word and went, becoming the father of the great spiritual nation of those who have faith. God changed his name to Abraham and blessed him. Abraham had two sons: Ishmael, the ancestor of the Muslims, and Isaac, the ancestor of the Hebrews, the people of Israel. But God's promise to Abraham was linked to Isaac, father of Israel (Jacob).

So God chose Israel as the people through whom He would make Himself known to the world, and entrusted them with the mission. The mission is to bring all peoples to the one true God (Deuteronomy 6:4).

Israel failed in its mission because of its unfaithfulness. God withdrew the mission. Despite this, Israel remained God's people. Through his people, God opened a breach to create the Church, so that it could fulfill its mission. It was this mission that Jesus revealed to his disciples in the following words: "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit...". (Matthew 28:19) Christians are disciples through faith in Christ. From then on, every Christian has the responsibility to fulfill the mission like Israel, and enjoys the same level of blessings. Christians are heirs with Christ of the goods of the Kingdom of heaven. They are members of God's people in the same way as the Hebrews. "To all who received her, to those who believe in her name, she gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God." (John 1: 12-13)
