If you asked ten random people to define what love is, you\u2019d surely get ten different answers. We often define what we love based on what we value or appreciate most. But with so many different and conflicting tastes, Jesus\u2019 disciples must seek the truth about love.<\/p>\n
Our culture, our own values, or what we feel deep in our hearts do not truly define love. The true definition of love comes from God, because \u00abGod is love\u00bb (1 John 4:8). Therefore, only He can give us a true understanding of what love is. 1 Corinthians 13 is entirely devoted to the definition of love.<\/p>\n
1 Corinthians 13:5 says that love does not take evil into account. Evil is anything that opposes God and His ways. Evil is when we disobey God\u2019s Law, make the wrong choice, or cause harm to someone.<\/p>\nIn fact, evil arises when we fail to love God and love our neighbor.
\nFor example, if someone has a difficult personality and does not know the love of Jesus, let us not rejoice in that. Love should lead us to pray for that person and share the truth about Jesus with them. Or if we see someone who has hurt us suffering, their pain should not bring us joy. Instead, we should forgive them just as God has forgiven us. Love rejoices when God\u2019s truth is spread, lived out, and shared.\n
Take some time today to examine the differences between your own definition of love and God\u2019s. What misunderstandings do you have? What actions or thoughts can you change to love more? Most importantly, with whom can you share the truth about God\u2019s love? Make a list of two or three people for whom you can pray and talk about God and His love.<\/p>\n
