A guide to the promises of God's grace

The Bible is full of God’s promises and covenants with us. These covenants are His way of showing us His deep love and care for us, even if we don’t fully understand them. They give us the assurance that He will meet our needs and walk with us on our spiritual journey. Here is a A guide to the 8 covenants in the Bible, along with an overview of their meanings.

The Covenant of Abraham

The first covenant in the Bible is found in Genesis 12–17 and is known as the Abrahamic Covenant. This covenant was established between Abraham and God, in which God promised to make Abraham a great nation, to bless his descendants, to give them land, to be their God, and to bless those who bless Abraham. This covenant was fulfilled by Jesus Christ, since He is a descendant of Abraham.

The Mosaic Alliance

The second covenant is found in Exodus 19–24 and is known as the Mosaic Covenant or the Sinai Covenant. It was established between God and Israel at Mount Sinai, after they were freed from Egypt. In this covenant, God promised to be the God of Israel if they obeyed Him and followed His laws. This covenant came to an end when Jesus came to Earth, as it was a temporary agreement intended to lead people to salvation through Christ.

The Davidic Covenant

The third covenant is found in 2 Samuel 7 and is also known as the Davidic Covenant. In this covenant, God promised King David that one of his descendants would always sit on the throne of Israel forever. This promise was fulfilled by Jesus Christ, who was born of the line of David centuries later.

Noah's Covenant

The fourth covenant is found in Genesis 9–17 and is also known as the Noahic Covenant or the everlasting covenant because it will never end (Genesis 9:16). In this covenant, God promised never again to destroy all life on Earth because of human sin by flooding it once more (Genesis 9:11).

The Priestly Alliance

The fifth covenant is found in Numbers 25–28 and is also known as the priestly or Levitical covenant, since it specifically concerned the priests serving in the Tabernacle (Numbers 18). It included laws regarding offerings, sacrifices, the ordination of priests, dietary laws for priests, tithes for the support of religious practices (Leviticus 27), and so on—all pointing toward redemption through Jesus Christ later in history.

The Alliance of the New

Jerusalem The sixth covenant is found in Revelation 21–22 and is also known as the covenant of the New Jerusalem or the millennial reign, since it specifically concerns what will happen during Christ’s 1,000-year reign on Earth, during which there will be peace among all nations (Revelation 20).

The New Testament or New Mosaic Covenant

The seventh covenant is found throughout the New Testament, but especially in Galatians 3–4, where Paul explains that the New Testament fulfills everything contained in Moses’ writings on the law (Galatians 3:24). This new covenant promises eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ rather than through strict adherence to the Old Testament law (Galatians 3:26).

The Eternal Covenant of the New Testament

Finally, we come to our eighth and final biblical covenant, the eternal covenant of the New Testament, found in Hebrews 13 and Revelation 22 and 23, where it is stated that we are saved forever by grace, through faith in Jesus Christ alone (Hebrews 10; Ephesians 2), and that God will never break His covenant with us (Revelation 22 and 23) because it comes from Him and is eternal in nature (Hebrews 13).

As Christians living today, we have many reasons to hope and to be encouraged by the biblical covenants that God has made with us throughout history, from Abraham to Jesus Christ, our Savior and the Savior of all humanity from corruption and the influence of evil in the universe, as well as our founder and righteous representative on Earth forever!
These eight promises are a remarkable demonstration of God’s greatness, for they assure us that, no matter what we face in our lives today or in the future, God will not leave us alone, but will walk alongside us, guiding us so that we may see His plan for our lives!
