(Ecclesiastes 2:1-11)

I became great—greater than anyone who had ever lived in Jerusalem before me. And even my wisdom remained with me. Whatever my eyes desired, I did not deny them; I did not withhold any pleasure from my heart; for my heart took delight in all my toil, and that was my reward. (Ecclesiastes 2:9–10)

This verse sums up the message of Ecclesiastes in this passage. In the end, Ecclesiastes concludes that everything is vanity. There is no benefit; for in the end, we are forced to leave everything behind. The rich die, and so do the poor. Just as the wise and the foolish do.

King Solomon was very happy, very rich and very powerful. In contrast, none of that could replace the assurance he found in God’s presence in his life. Nothing. And what can give us assurance in our lives without Jesus Christ?

Solomon said that even joy is a gift from God. (Eccl. 2:26) Jesus added, «What good is it for a man to gain the whole world yet lose his soul? What can he give in exchange for his soul? » (Matt. 16:26)

Clinging to Jesus Christ is a perfect guarantee for our present life and the life to come. Jesus taught us to love God and our neighbor. This constitutes for us a reasonable form of worship that we must offer Him—a true source of blessing and salvation, and a guarantee. Do we need to murder for fleeting glory or for a political office that we must relinquish the very next day? Vanity.

There were men among us who were reputed to be wiser and more powerful in Africa and around the world, but who were unable to overcome disease and death despite their considerable means.
